Lately, there’s been a lot of chatter on social media about changes in AJUSD’s special education department. We’ve seen the posts, the speculation, and the “what’s really going on?” questions. And honestly? We get it. Change invites questions. And it deserves honest answers.
Yes, it's true. Some of our current special education teachers will not be returning next school year. That’s a tough reality, and we don’t take it lightly. These educators have left their mark on our students, and we’re sincerely grateful for the heart and care they’ve shown.
But let’s be clear: this isn’t some secret plot to dismantle special education in AJUSD. No one is being pushed out. No services are being cut. No students are being left behind.
Just the Facts:
• No one is being “fired” or forced out. Each teacher made a personal decision to leave—for reasons that are private, and frankly, not ours to share.
• This isn’t just an AJUSD issue. Nationally, over 13% of special education teachers leave the classroom each year, compared to 8% of general education teachers.
• Arizona—like the rest of the country—is facing a serious SPED teacher shortage. Smaller districts like ours feel the strain even more.
• We are not cutting special education. Let’s say that louder for the folks in the back: AJUSD is not cutting special education. We are actively hiring to rebuild a strong, committed team.
• Every student will continue receiving services. Every IEP will be honored—because that’s the law, and more importantly because it’s the right thing to do.
• No SPED positions have been eliminated. This is about staff transitions, not program reductions.
• We welcome your questions. Really. Ask your principal. Call the district. Show up at a board meeting. Submit questions to Donuts & Discovery. We’re not hiding anything.
A Word About the Rumor Mill
Let’s have a real moment: social media can be helpful. But it can also be a hotbed of misinformation, where fear and frustration spread faster than facts. Just because something is posted doesn’t mean it’s the complete story—or even remotely accurate.
Look—we respect every community member’s right to share concerns. But if you want the full story? Talk to the people actually doing the work.
What’s Next?
We’re moving forward with purpose. Interviews are already happening, and we’re focused on bringing in qualified, compassionate professionals who are here for the right reasons—our students. Our commitment remains the same as it’s always been: Kids First. And that includes every student with an IEP.
Let’s Keep Talking
We invite you to be part of the conversation. Have questions? Talk to your principal. Call the district. Come to Donuts & Discovery. Join us at a board meeting. We want to hear from you!
Transitions aren't always easy, but they happen in every district. What’s important is that our values haven’t changed: every child matters. Every voice matters. Every family matters. And we’re going to keep showing up for all of them.
