In AJUSD classrooms, students don’t just memorize formulas — they learn to:
• Reason abstractly and quantitatively
• Model real-world situations with math
• Use tools strategically and attend to precision
• Recognize patterns and connect ideas across topics
Our goal? Students who can look at any problem and say, “I can figure this out.”
Aligned to Arizona Standards
AJUSD’s math curriculum is fully aligned with the Arizona Mathematics Standards, which set clear expectations for each grade level.
These standards focus on two key areas:
• Standards for Mathematical Practice (MP): The “habits of mind” students develop, like making sense of problems, reasoning, modeling, using tools, and looking for patterns.
• Content Standards: Specific math skills and knowledge for each grade, from foundational skills in elementary to advanced high school coursework.
From Kindergarten to Calculus
Our math pathway helps students grow year by year:
• Elementary (K–5): Counting, addition, subtraction, shapes, measurements, and early problem-solving
• Junior High (6–8): Fractions, decimals, ratios, expressions, equations, and introductory geometry
• High School: Algebra, Geometry, Precalculus, College Math, Calculus, and AP-level math aligned with Arizona Department of Education and College Board standards
Tools We Use: SAAVAS Math (K–8)
In elementary and junior high, AJUSD uses SAAVAS Math (formerly Pearson) — a rigorous, research-based program that:
• Builds deep conceptual understanding
• Provides real-world problem-solving practice
• Integrates interactive digital tools and hands-on learning
• Supports diverse learners with personalized instruction
SAAVAS Math is designed to help students master essential math skills while gaining the confidence to apply them in and beyond the classroom.
