Explusion Hearings

Explusion Hearings

At AJUSD, we are committed to maintaining safe and supportive learning environments for all students. In some cases, serious disciplinary matters may lead to a formal expulsion hearing.

What is an Expulsion Hearing?
An expulsion hearing is a formal process to review incidents of serious misconduct and determine whether a student will be removed from the school district for a specified period.

Who Conducts the Hearing?
AJUSD has an appointed hearing officer who conducts expulsion hearings. The hearing officer ensures the process is fair, impartial, and aligned with district policy and state law.

What to Expect at a Hearing

  • The hearing officer will review the evidence presented by the school and allow the student and family to share their perspective.
  • Both sides may present witnesses and supporting documentation.
  • The hearing officer will make a recommendation to the Governing Board, which has the final decision on the expulsion.

Rights of Students and Families

  • To receive written notice of the hearing date, time, and reason for the expulsion recommendation.
  • To be represented by an advocate or attorney (if desired).
  • To present evidence, witnesses, and testimony on the student’s behalf.
