WHAT IS ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY?
ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY is a system of tools and strategies, which enables a student to function to his or her maximum potential educationally, vocationally, socially, and in their daily living activities.

The term ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY means any item, piece of equipment, or product system, whether acquired commercially, off the shelf, modified, or customized, that is used in increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of students.

  • AT shall be available to all students.
  • AT increases student opportunities for education, integration, and social interactions.
  • Students who use AT may not necessarily require special education programs and services.
  • As needs change with student growth and development, AT shall remain appropriate and relevant for the student.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY POLICY AND PROCEDURES
FOCUS: 
A commitment to providing service to all students through a referral process.  Students will be identified with AT needs and tools and strategies will then be provided to the educators, through a district contact person.

WHO TO TARGET: 
Any student referred by an educator.

FUNDING:
AJUSD may not be directly financially responsible for all strategies or tools suggested and/or recommended by the AT team. Funding sources outside the district may be pursued as the need arises.

SITE CONTACT PERSON: 
An AT team member will be assigned to each site and will be responsible for distributing referral forms and notifying the district contact person of assistance needed.

DISTRICT CONTACT PERSON: 
An AT team member will be responsible for collecting referral forms and assigning a facilitator.

FACILITATOR: 
Review referral information with teacher, maintain paperwork, provide suggestions, and present information to the AT team.
 


EDUCATOR REFERRAL PROCESS FOR ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY
  1. Notify the district or site AT contact person.  (District AT contact:  Diana Woods at Superstition Mountain Elementary School, Extension 5649 or dwoods@smes.ajusd.org
  2. Complete the AT referral form and send toDiana Woods, District AT Contact.
  3. The District AT Contact will send the referral form to an AT Facilitator (Assistive Technology Committee Member).
  4. The AT Facilitator will contact the teacher, set up an interview, and complete a checklist.
  5. The AT Facilitator will make initial suggestions.
  6. The AT Committee will review the student (within 30 days).
  7. The AT Committee will review recommendations made.
  8. The AT Facilitator will contact the teacher for a Two-Month Review.
  9. An Annual Review will be scheduled.
  10. An AT Evaluation will occur.
  11. An AT Facilitator will complete a Recommendation Report.
