There is a free lunch and this summer it will be served at four sites in Apache Junction. The Apache Junction Unified School District, in coordination with the Department of Agricultural Services and the Arizona State Department of Education, is once again offering the Summer Lunch Program - free nutritious meals for children 18 years of age or younger. This program is open to all children living in the area.
Children do not have to be of school age, attend the AJUSD schools, or have received free and reduced meals during the year to be eligible for the free lunch. Persons up to 22 who are participating in school programs for the mentally or physically disabled are also welcome.
This summer, there will be four lunch sites. Lunch will be served at all sites from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at each site. The sites are:
Four Peaks Elementary School, 1785 N. Idaho Road
Apache Junction High School, 2525 S. Ironwood Drive
Mountain Shadows Education Center, 2805 S. Ironwood Drive
Superstition Mountain Elementary School, 550 S. Ironwood Drive
Lunches will begin Monday, June 2, and will continue to be served Monday through Friday, through July 18. Lunch at Mountain Shadows Education Center will only be served Monday through Thursday. Children can be brought to the sites by parents or caretakers for free lunches. Adult meals can also be purchased for $2.50 if the adult wishes to eat with the child/children.
The Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) was created to ensure that all children continue to receive nutritious meals at approved sites during school vacations. Good nutrition is essential for maximizing children’s physical and social development during extended vacation periods as well as during the school year.
