FOOD SERVICES

Although an estimated 13 percent of 9-11 year-olds are overweight, they aren't getting the nutrients they need to stay healthy and perform in the classroom. According to statistics, only 2 percent of children meet the USDA's Five Food Group recommendation. Apache Junction Schools Food Services Department meets the Nutrition Standards for the School Meals Initiative set by the Federal Government. We strive to raise our standards by providing healthy choices for students such as:

  • No fried foods
  • Ala carte items with a 9% or less fat content
  • Baked chips
  • Fresh salad
  • Fruit trays
  • Yogurt
  • Fresh fruits and vegetables

In addition, all students are given the choice of 1% chocolate milk, 1% white milk and 2% white milk.

We now offer a more healthy breakfast menu to include cereals higher in fiber and more fresh fruits.
Breakfasts are $1.00

Elementary school lunches have a choice of at least two entrees per day with some schools having a third choice for older students. A fresh salad bar is available at each school as part of the lunch.
Elementary and Middle School lunches are $1.65

High School and Middle School lunches have 3 entree choices daily, one of which is pizza. Salad bar is also included with each lunch. The Middle and High Schools have ala carte lines in addition to complete lunch lines. Six food carts are setup across the High School campus, four of which are run by students clubs as a fund raiser.
High School lunches are $2.00

Apache Junction School Food Service Advisory Council is working on choices and ideals in making our program the best it can be. The Child Nutrition Reauthorization Act recently signed by President Bush strengthens school feeding programs and mandates "wellness policies" to help improve students' health.

Daily Goals of Apache Junction Schools Food Service are:

  1. Meet the recommended dietary allowances
  2. Follow guidelines set by Child Nutrition Program
  3. Serve quality meals
  4. Serve eye-appealing foods
  5. Follow good safety and sanitation
  6. Follow the Motto: "If you would not eat it don't feed it to the Student!"
  7. Have good rapport with our customer, the Student

All menus are analyzed to ensure that we are meeting the standards of CNP. Parent are encouraged to have lunch with their students. Lunches are $2.50 for adults, and includes: one entree, salad bar and milk or juice.

We continue seeking parents to serve on the Advisory Council for Food Service.
